Current Projects

Together in Hope has currently identified and selected projects in El Salvador, Africa, Philippines, and Hawaii for relational partnering and funding. These projects are described briefly below. Other projects are also under consideration.

EL SALVADOR

El Mozote

This project has been fully funded.

On December 11, 1981, all but one woman of the entire civilian population present in the village of El Mozote in Morazan Department, El Salvador was massacred by Salvadorian government troops, including more than 130 children. Relatives and others from the surrounding community have erected a memorial to those murdered in the massacre and painted a wall mural of hope with colorful plaques for each of the children who lost their lives. When Director Diane McGehee visited El Mozote in March 2008, she discovered that funds were needed to complete the plaques so that each child had a plaque. Together in Hope has funded the remaining plaques.

Uganda

In partnership with Emmanuel Katongole, a Ugandan Catholic priest, Together in Hope is raising funds to support Bethany House on Lake Victoria in Entebbe, Uganda. Bethany House is a place of hospitality where a Christian vision of peace and reconciliation is fostered through pilgrimage, rest and reflection. Emmanuel Katongole serves congregations in North Carolina, as a professor of theology and world Christianity at the Duke Divinity School, and as the co-director of the Duke Center for Reconciliation. From these various aspects and locations of his work, Dr. Katongole brings people from around the world to Africa, to experience her gifts and challenges; the joys and aspirations of her people, and their pains and struggles. He calls on people to listen and understand Africa’s true story and invites them to ‘come and see’ Africa, fully knowing that those who do so, will be set on a journey (literally) that has potential for deep transformation in both their own lives and the lives of their African brothers and sisters. Bethany House provides a retreat facility for that work.

Cote d’Ivoire

Malaria Kills more than one million children every year. The spread of Malaria can be prevented with the use of treated mosquito nets. Together in Hope is raising funds to support the efforts of the Texas Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church to purchase these nets for the people of Cote d’Ivoire.
